Hawaii's Waimea Bay on the North Shore is a perfect place to hang if you’re looking to escape the crowds of Waikiki. The beauty of Waimea Bay beach park is situated at the mouth of Waimea valley Waimea Bay is surrounded by huge black rocks. The hills on either side of the bay are good spots for whale watching during the heavy migratory months of January through March as well as Big wave watching during the Hawaiian winter surf season. |

Beautiful, Awesome, and Wonderful!” is what one visitor described this scenic cove. This pleasant and popular family beach offers grassy picnic areas, showers, restrooms, and even an on-duty lifeguard. You can also view a memorial to big wave rider legend Eddie Aikau. Not only is the water one of the cleanest in Hawaii with good depth (which is good for snorkeling) but there is a ton of sand to play any type of ball activity.
Some of the most amazing sunsets can be seen from here as the sun begins to fall below the horizon. Such is a view not only seen by beach goers but by hobbyists in their sailboats anchored in the bay taking advantage of the calm summer waters. |

Surf: The Power and the Beauty Winter on the other hands is a different story. Waimea Bay is home of the largest, dangerous, most spectacular, ridable surf in the world. This hawaiian world -class big wave surfing spot is considered premier to many in the big wave surfing community. Rip currents are strong, and the waves can rise to 40-50 foot faces, even the waves on the shore line can get as high as thirteen feet. So unless you are a professional surfer or good swimmer, after September you’ll find your self taking pictures rather then taking a dip. But don’t be embarrassed because even the most experienced of hawaiian water men think twice before entering the ocean when the surf is huge. |

Waimea bay (The original big-wave spot), starts breaking on the outside boil in the middle of the bay around 12-14 foot, there is a buoy located about a mile outside of the bay, it is used to predict the current conditions and really big waves coming through. Big wave veterans don't consider Waimea to be "Big" until its 18-20 feet, The Hawaii Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, an ASP-sanctioned specialty event, takes place on a single day when waves at Waimea Bay, exceed 20 feet. On December 15, 2004 when a swell generated waves above 20 feet, the Hawaii Quicksilver surfing event in memory of Eddie Aikau was held for only the seventh time in the past 19 years. The outcome was Hawaii surfing native and twenty-five year old Bruce Irons winning the historical event. Bruce's perfect 100 ride, started out with a critical take-off on a massive 35-foot wave, followed by several arcing turns, and ending on the thick inside shore-break with a bone-crunching, close-out tube ride with arms held high.
