Private Lessons

Private music lessons in voice, piano and guitar are offered from the beginning to the intermediate level, both for children and adults.

Private lessons are ½ hour per week. Lessons are on-going during the year except for the month of December, when the studio is closed for the Christmas holiday.

Creative Jam Classes (2-6 students)

These are recommended for the younger child who is not quite ready for long-term private lessons or those of any age who would enjoy playing in an ensemble. Students sing, dance and play on xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, drums and other percussion instruments. Music concepts and literacy are part of each class.

Classes are held for one hour per week in three 12-week sessions per year: January through March, April through June and September through November.

Studio Philosophy

S.M.I.L.E. lessons and classes are student-centered and process oriented, rather than teacher-centered and performance oriented. My goal is to facilitate a quality musical experience for students. I use a combination of approaches, depending on the age, background and proficiency of the student. These include the Orff-Schulwerk process, Joan Boytim's Solfeggio Singing, the Kodály method, John Feierabend's Conversational Solfege and Multiple Intelligences among others. Notation and theory are combined with composition and improvisation to provide students with a means of creative expression at any level of ability.

Studio recitals are held once or twice per year, in June and/or November. Students can choose whether or not to participate in this opportunity to share their music.
